Planting trees is globally considered an effective meassure to protect the climate and combat climate change. Trees not only bind the greenhouse gas CO2, they counteract desertification and soil erosion. The´"Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign" by UNEP envourages people worldwide to plant trees to combat climate change.
The "Billion Tree Campaign" was initiated in 2006 to plant 1 billion trees by the end of 2007. 1.5 billion trees had been planted under this campaign – far in excess of the year-end target of 1 billion. Bayer has supported this campaign as one of its six official partners from the private sector. Due to its success, the campaign is continuing. By the end of 2009, 7.4 billion trees had been planted.
